A little bit of Gallup

Today we went around Gallup for a bit. This guy Bob showed us around Rehoboth for a bit. Then we took a little ride and he showed everyone where Church Rock Academy was, which is my school. Church Rock is actually located on the reservation.

Bob drove us onto the reservation a little bit farther, down the road that runs right past the school. The road turned to sand and he told us about how bad the roads get after it rains and snows. We drove past some houses that looked like sheds, probably like ten by ten foot houses made of plywood. An entire family lives in. Not all the houses looked like that...but they still looked fairly disheveled. Some without running water or eletricity. And these are the places the kids I will be teaching live....

Bob showed us some hiking spots right near by Rehoboth, probably a five minute drive. They are at the Red Rock State Park. It is what we get to see everday and it is basically the backyard of my school.

Next we went to the Flea Market. There we tried Tamales and Fry Bread. I guess usually there are a lot of people at the Flea Market selling things but not today for some reason. I did think it was funny because I just saw Charlie Wilson's War when I was at home and people were selling the dvd of it.

We also went to El Rancho, a restaurant and hotel/motel, tonight for dinner. We keep on getting taken out for lunch and dinner...so much food. But i am having good mexican food which is awesome. El Rancho is known for having people like John Wayne, Dick Van Dyke, and Lucille Ball coming to it. So the next two pictures are for the parents.

Yeah for having an inservice day on Monday...my first day of student teaching :)

So is each small building a classroom? Is there one main building anywhere? Are you allowed to take your students outside for a 1st-grade paced hike/nature walk? I know you may not know the answers to these questions yet, but I'm quite curious. :)Love,Julie
